The Thoth Tarot Hermit-ATU- 9.
The zodiacal attribution to the Thoth Hermit Trump card is the sign of Virgo. Virgo is an earthly sign that represents the most receptive feminine form of earth. Virgo is ruled by Mercury and Mercury is exalted in Virgo as well. One might say that the most receptive form of Earth forms a crust over Hades; Mercury, a form of Hades, is also the fiery messenger of Spirit, that has descended into matter, signaling the reintegration by Spirit into being. This is known as the "Formula of the Princess", the mode of fulfillment of the Great Work. Thus, the fertility generated by this event and that of Virgo itself is shown as the Green Wheat background of the Thoth Deck Card.
The Hermit is a solitary figure, often displaying great aptitude for meditation and contemplation, and this is implied by the lone hermit figure of the Thoth Card. The Thoth Tarot shows and elderly man symbolizing the wisdom of the ages.
The Thoth Hermit carries a lantern, implying intuitive knowledge. Also in the center of the Hermit's lantern is the sigil of the Great King of Fire, who is also represented by the Hebrew word Yod-the secret fire, which is the Hebrew letter attributed to this Thoth Tarot card. The Hebrew word, Yod, also means Hand. Hence, the hand of the Hermit is displayed as the center of the card. The image of the Thoth- Hermit is also bent into the shape of the letter Yod while being cloaked in the red robes of Binah (Mother's blood), the Great Mother in whom he gestates.
As I have said, the Thoth Deck Hermit symbolizes the Hebrew Letter Yod, meaning hand, and all letters of the Hebrew alphabet are combinations of this foundational letter. Yod is the first letter of the name Tetragrammaton (YHVH) symbolizing the Farther who is Wisdom, and the highest form of Mercury. He is the Logos; the Creator of all worlds, accordingly his representative in the physical world is the spermatozoon which is illustrated on the Thoth Tarot card. The figure of the Hermit seems to be staring at the Orphic egg which is conterminous with the Universe, and is wrapped in the iridescent many-colored serpentine energy of Mercury.
The Thoth Tarot card, with its domesticated three headed dog Cerberus that guards the gates of Hell, and representing Time; The Past (head looking back) The Present (Head looking at hermit) and the Future (Head looking forward). The Hermit card also brings to mind The Legend of Persephone, and I would suggest that the student read this legend to further understand this card. In this Trump, is illustrated the secret of life and all its workings. For instance, Yod=Phallus=Spermatozoon-Hand=Logos=Virgin. Crowley says in his book of Thoth, "There is perfect identity, not merely Equivalence, of the Extremes, the Manifestation, and the Method."
Tree of Self
As you may note, in both Decks, Key/ATU 9, is about the solitary person who walks the path that leads to the Higher Self and perfection of the soul. It is the image of the Adept-Magus and their detachment from the material world of man. S/He's often so far advanced in psyche, that most people find him/her difficult to comprehend. However, this does not deter their willingness to light the path for those who sincerely wish to know the depths of self. This person/hermit, corresponds to the archetype or the "selfless servant of the actual Self" searching for the truth in the souls of human beings. He is easily compared to Diogenes* who walk through the streets of Athens, baring a lantern in broad daylight and responded to the reason for his actions with: "I am looking for an honest man".
Truth is made manifest in this universe. Information becomes form here. Therefore, when people want to have a picture or word of truth, they overlook that this will not make them into servants of the truth, but rather victims of their own unrecognizable emptiness, clinging to words or picture , hoping to find a purpose in life. It is only beyond all man-made thesis, all models and formulas for explaining the world, Spirit and universe, beyond all words, that the wise man or woman knows the truth that human beings speak about, is not the truth and therefore, remain silent. Only in the silence, was our identities created, and it is in silence that nothing more can be represented by words. Therefore, one finds that it is no longer a matter of the images behind the truth, but rather the truth behind the images. Hence, tarot is seen as a "threshold or doorway" to the silence that holds truth.
The background of this card is dark helping us to realize that we must withdraw from the Words of the Patriarch/the man-made world, and reconsider our identity and/or position. We must withdraw from the "rat race" of everyday life, in order to become clear about both the connections in life and our goals. In the solitude of self, we learn to become humble and modest and accepting our own ephemerality, all which brings us back to the actual nature of our character-our true Personality that is a Self-Reflection of the Soul/Sun/Son of the Divine Creative. We are not a "reflection upon self" made by pictures or words. We are the Soul's, intimate and creative Self-Reflection in matter.
Adam Khadmon-the heavenly human
The Hermit is the "wise old" companion-the inner Heavenly Human that lies deep within our silence. A silence that we can't seem to hear anymore, because of the raucous calamity of words racing around in our media soaked brains. We are the Psyche, born to operate an "artificial Self", not because we are lacking divinity, but because we are the Light that we seek, in self-reflection. I AM the Light. I AM the way, I Am the Wealth, I Am the eternal seeker of I AM. For the infinite I AM cannot see itself without a "Me". Therefore, we are all the Divine Trinity in manifestation, as I AM Me-"I" being Spirit, "AM" is Mind, and "Me", is the mind's self-reflection. The Hermit knows that we are the object being meditated on by the Sun/Soul. We are the fulfillment of Eheieh (Kether), a Hebrew word that means, "I Will Be" which is the "word of god", the first "shout" that put waves of frequency in dark matter. I know this, because I AM Being. I know that each of us are part of the Universal Collective Unconscious-the Whole Mind, and that this bastion of Self-Knowledge created a way to be intimate with the infinite potentials of Self.
Each of us are "successful information", for truth is made manifest. Just look at the word Human, it comes from the Mandarin word-Hu-meaning god and Man comes from the Hindu word-Manas-meaning mind. Hence, Human means, "God Mind". In the Hermetic Qabalah, this human is called Horus, in the Egyptian Tarot or Adam Kadmon on the Tree of Life and is not the homo sapiens sapiens, the one you operate in "YOUR NAME". You are Spirit-which comes from the Greek word "Spiro" which means "breath" and/or "to breathe". Your bodies breath is its life and you are the Life that makes it breathe! Hence you are the biophotons that spark between the synapses not the body itself!
It is time to meet your inner Horus and/or Adam Kadmon. You are not a homo sapiens sapiens, who climbed out of dirt to reach for the "heavens", a word that doesn't represent truth. Instead you are of the in-Form-Action of the Sun/Son of God-, who has condensed the energy that light, over and over again, by self-reflection to the point of being able to operate a physical form, in ITs NAME! That name is I AM... and you decide what that self-reflection is going to be by choosing the description of Self/IAM. Hence, "Above all things, know thyself", helps us become the in-form-action of the Divine One who is Two. I AM Life not "I am seeking a life". Therefore, to know yourself, requires one to plunge their identity into the deep, dark Ocean of Mother Binah (consciousness bathed in the Unconscious by meditation) for in that silence, is your Beauty, floating on a Lotus of Mother's love, a happy Buddha who Knows Thyself and is meditating you into this world.
The Tarot of Druids- Key IX-Goibniu
This key of the Tarot of Druids, is again a caricature of a Celtic god who was known as blacksmith, who forged arms for battle. He was a solitary figure of a Trinity God of Divine Craftsman.
Goibhniu, (Celtic: “Divine Smith”, )Welsh Gofannon, ancient Celtic smith god. Goibhniu figured in Irish tradition as one of a trio of divine craftsmen; the other two were Luchta the wright and Creidhne the metalworker. Goibhniu was also the provider of the sacred otherworld feast, the Fled Goibhnenn;

- A stage in life where wisdom is sought through introspection and isolation.
- Using your work in the world and uniting it with the Spiritual realms to attain the Highest state of Mind.
- Being yourself by pursuing the ("above all things, know thyself") , deep inner philosophy of O=2.
