The Thoth 5 of Cups: Disappointment:
Many people inappropriately term some tarot cards as "bad" and others as "good" which is the 2-dimensional thinking of our culture. This is assuredly errant thought as the Tarot is about conscious energy and its movement as "your multidimensional life". Life is about gathering knowledge and knowledge is not good nor bad, it is in-form-action.
The 5's, which have often been termed as bad, are really the necessary disruption of the placidity of the 4's. Your inner self is telling the outer self it is time to get over yourself and move! This is also true for the 5 of cups. Emotional disappointment makes us fragile (the five glass cups), and vulnerable. Like the murky sea in the background we become depressed and then angry, as the orange/red sky. We are now off balance (the askew star) and feeling uprooted (the lily pads with falling lotus blossoms). The transformational aspect of disappointment is shown by the universal sign of the butterfly (the roots of the lily pads in the shape of a butterfly) signifying transformation and rebirth.
There is trouble here as astrologically this card is attributed to Mars in Scorpio; Mars is the planet associated with vitality, assertiveness and dynamic activity. Scorpio is the sign of emotional depth; thus disappointment is felt deeply "to the core" here and blooms into anger and/or revenge. Therefore, this is not a trivial disappointment such as not getting the right color of car, but a real stinging disappointment that in the next 5 weeks or 5 months has been or will be experienced. There could also be 5 years of disappointment or disappointment that goes back to a period 5 years ago or even disappointment that has been experienced deeply when you were 5 years old and is still influencing your present emotional state. All of these meanings are determined by where the card lays in the reading. Any way it is determined, it's now time to transform your emotion into a free butterfly rather than a "worm" in a hard shell of disappointment. "Stuff" happens to the just and unjust alike and by releasing disappointment, we can then turn anger into a personal ambition to create more motion in our life! This card states, “Release the past, for that is a dead place, fly forward into the sunny now!"
As I have previously stated, Geburah (a type of Kali Ma), the 5th Tee of Life Sephiroth, that rules the four 5's, may be severe but she brings a necessary corrective in our lives. Severity corrects by tearing away all that is useless thought, and emotion; all that is outdated and unproductive.
In this Universe most of us understand physics 101 and the first law of thermodynamics that states there is only one energy that we can't create, nor can we destroy it. We can however, transfer it and transform it. Transformation is a process of deconstructing and then reconstructing that which is envisioned, thus what seems to end is merely changing through deconstruction.
Transmitting is done sexually , especially for a Mars in the house of Scorpio and/or in some form of intimacy and/or communication, where we are in communion with someone or something that we deem important. Such as the intimacy of healers. Or shamanistic rites if human, or the Universal sexuality of electrons transferring charge in the powerful union of male and female polarities. The flow of this vital force is often called love, as such we could say that the intimacy of the negative pole as it joins with a positive pole of a magnet proves love. But being Spiritual beings, we know Love is more that energy flow, it is a communion of multiple attributes that are even more apparent when a physical Spiritual body is present, such as, a HuMan (god-mind and/or Horus) flowing through the homo sapiens sapiens body to intimately join with its most beloved.
To the enfleshed Spirit (fiery will of the One), Intimacy is not just physical touching, tasting, smelling, hearing or seeing, even though those are usually involved; Intimacy is Tantric (expanding and liberating), where one Auric Field blends with another and expanding both beyond mundane operation. Energy weaving into a new pattern for both parties is Tantra-a Sanskrit word meaning to "expand and liberate". A multiplication of 7 dimensions of an auric field weaving with another 7 dimensions of an auric field, becoming 49 frequencies in harmony. These 49 are really a numeric or gemantic 4+ 9= 13 and Key 13 is the Death Card, which means a "Spiritual Transformation". Hence the 49 petaled lotus in the center of the Rosy Cross.
However wonderful energy-in-motion is (emotion), it also has an end or transformational quality; However, if one's emotional identity is allowed to progress one can bypass the resulting moments of putrefaction. Therefore, once "a lid" is placed on an emotion, it becomes profaned. That would be the second law of Thermodynamics where"...all things proceed from order to disorder", so a Master Weaver of Self, would see the disorder in self -repressed emotional patterns, and deconstruct them and reconstruct a new order of Self which is an emotional reconstruction/release of Self-awareness, without need of assistance. To the indoctrinated common person, whose programing automatically directs emotion against the individual, there seems no surcease. This is where Geburah,The Mother of Time, steps in to assist us, she makes us honestly view the disorder, and as a corrective, we can now remove the old and build the new. As a master of creation (A master of measurement and/or Time), we must know emotion (energy-in-motion) as a willed action rather than a spontaneous reaction to a suppressed fear. Hence, the Power of a Magus.
The 5 of cups is also known as Lord of loss in pleasure. The angels of the Decan are: Livoyah and Pehilyah. As the 5 of cups, Geburah is influencing the Mental World, Geburah in Briah.
By now you may know that the Alchemical Element-Water represents the emotional/intuitional leves of the Unconscious who is the Mother of Consciousness. Therefor, a severe situation is sensually presented in the 5 of Cups without any conscious thought. Hence, it is an illusion built out of "fear of rejection", the basic foundation of survival thinking.
Therefore, the once full cups are empty, implying loss of that which is loved, Geburah is fiery of nature, and still water is totally at odds with this active force, thus causing a disturbance and loss of pleasure. This card, if supported by the accompanying cards, can even mean death of a loved one. The inverted pentagram represents the triumph of matter over spirit and where disturbance arises in the middle of ease.
tarot of the ages- five of cups
The Tarot of The Ages-Five of Cups, illustrates an image of disappointment, using Mayan like characters. Here a young male is perplexed and confused by an illusion he held. She was the "glint in his eye", and he was so overpowered by his sexual euphoria, that he thought that she thought of him in the same way. But there she is, back turned and arms crossed over her breast, which can only mean rejection. His "heart is broken", which is an illusion in itself. His dream is unrequited, and has nothing to do with his physical heart. When our "visions" fail us, we somehow are taught to fear destruction. Not so. Many dreams are a combination of people or peoples, and since each of us lives in our own vision of the world, more often than not, these dreams rarely come out as one individual sees them. This is really a process of grieving the loss of a dreamed future. Hearts are fine. Dream is dead. Hence, emotional cups are all spilled over and the flowers of romance are losing their petals.
Is this really serious? Are we supposed to dream for others? Since "freedom of choice" is involved, dreaming for others, is completely out of the question. It is time to realize, what Carl Jung realized and that is the "perfect lover", be it man or woman, is in the Unconscious of every man or woman and I find that this image is then transferred to our "hearts desire", which is an unfair illusion of control. Often the "perfect lover" is a media programed ideal that has no basis on the reality of individuals and by its constant repetition, implants this errant concept in the unconsciousness of the young. Truth being, our most beloved is our very own Soul, who has created us in its own imagination/ in-form-action. The body's very life depends on the automatic acceptance of the Soul/Spirit, for that is known as the "breath" of the body. The Greek root word of Spiro (to breathe) is in both Spirit and Spiral, and we are all "spiral" intertwinings of light frequencies. In Qabalah, Spirit is the Will of the Original One Energy. That will is called Eheieh and/or "I Will Be"! Hence, when we decide that our most beloved is inside of us as our "Soul Mate", we are happily engaged in life in a celebratory/Dionysian way of being.
Souls mates come from the concept of Anima (femine) and Animus (masculine) and in this energy transformational universe, to transmit energy requires "opposite polarity". That is why objects that consist of more negative electrons attract positive electrons from another body. Negative electrons are considered to be female and positive electrons are considered to be male. Hence, the female invokes the male. If you do not believe this, then explain why women work so hard, both in dress and cosmetics, at being "attractive"? Simply put, the Perfect Male or Perfect Female is the soul who has to become, male if transmitting "live force"/Prana to a female form and visa versa. Hence, our "soulmate" is not outside of us, but rather inside of us and once united inside, it becomes a union of Divine Love that we can now transmit outside of ourselves, forming powerful bonds to others. To know the "god or goddess" within, is to know thyself. For we are the "image" of that Divine Creative in the mirror of reflected light; a place we Qabalists, call Malkuth. That image changes by how we imagine "yourself" to be! Truth being, you wish to stop being disappointed in life, quit expecting life to by under the control of your indoctrination. Life belongs to the Soul, and it is time to get acquainted with your most beloved whom you rejected by "trying to fit in"; an abreaction of a child's fear of rejection and become an indoctrinated adult. Your real persona, is not the one made by the man-made world, it is the Psyche that is Soul which is a product of the Great I AM, that began everything!
The Anima-feminine and the Animus-masculine.* According to Sam Mcleod, a published researcher for the University of Manchester:
*The Anima/Animus
Another archetype is the anima/animus. The “anima/animus” is the mirror image of our biological sex, that is, the unconscious feminine side in males and the masculine tendencies in women.
Each sex manifests attitudes and behavior of the other by virtue of centuries of living together. The psyche of a woman contains masculine aspects (the animus archetype), and the psyche of a man contains feminine aspects (the anima archetype). Click on the link below for more information.
Here, on the Five of Cups, is one male-persona who doesn't respect the Will of Life which only means that Life won't respect your will inturn. Life, is my Soul/Psyche,it is the breath of Me. Hence I AM Life looking at itself as "Me". Respect yourself, by "Above all things, know thyself"! Life then respects you. This is the reasoning behind Qabalistic Philosophy. Qabalah means "to receive". You are obviously already Known to your Soul-to reject the ignorance of Patriarchal indoctrination, is to reclaim your inheritance, i.e., Your True Self of the Divine Creative. Disappointment doesn't visit the joy filled heart.
Both the Thoth and The Tarot of The Ages 5 of cups card, hold the same meanings.
When the 5 /Five of cups is thrown during a reading:
- The querent has been or will be experiencing emotional disappointment for 5 weeks or 5 months.

- The corrective of Geburah is being applied here, and it is the beginning of recovery where one sees the need to learn something new.
