Thoth- 8 of Disks-Prudence

The Lost Soul Tarot-8 of Pentacles

Thoth Tarot-8 of Disks-Prudence

The 8 of Disks and 8 of Pentacles both represent- talent, skill, craft, learning, and practical ideas being turned into a profitable profession. The Thoth card-Prudence and the Lost Soul Tarot- 8 of Pentacles symbolizes the harvest tree where hard work and skill have become fruitful and now you only need await the ripening of the harvest. This can be called the master craftsman's card, as mastery of a skill is depicted here. Skillful manipulation of physical material with talented hands. Here, the card represents a person whose work and skill are learned from diligence, and talent.

Creating both spiritual and material values, the querent shows patience in gaining success, even though they are not always focused on material gain. Here paying attention to details is also shown by the concentration of the craftsman. There can be no success without challenging work that excites creativity.

At the top of the colorful Thoth card is the Sun sign and at the bottom of the harvest tree is the astrological sign of Virgo. Virgo reminds us that by attending to details and utilizing our organizational skills, we shall repeat the just harvest. Trust in your skills is the foundation of this harvest rather than the need for control; only a deep abiding trust in your skills will reap the just reward as the harvest follows the ordered skill of the prudent mind. The 8 of Disks-Prudence, is Hod in Assiah, the material World. The Sun is in Virgo and the angels assigned to this Decan are Akaiah and Kehethel.

Individuals with the Sun in Virgo often exhibit distinctive characteristics associated with this zodiac sign. Virgo is ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication and intellect, influencing their traits. Here are some unique characteristics of someone with their Sun in Virgo:

  1. Analytical and Detail-Oriented: Virgos have a keen eye for detail and are highly analytical. They excel in tasks that require precision and attention to minutiae.

  2. Practical and Grounded: Virgos are known for their practicality and down-to-earth nature. They prefer tangible, realistic solutions and are not prone to flights of fancy.

  3. Organized and Efficient: Virgos thrive in organized environments. They have a natural ability to streamline processes and ensure efficiency, making them excellent planners and organizers.

  4. Service-Oriented: Virgos derive satisfaction from helping others. They often find fulfillment in acts of service and are willing to go the extra mile to support those around them.

  5. Critical Thinkers: Virgos have a sharp mind and are critical thinkers. They enjoy problem-solving and are adept at finding logical solutions to challenges.

  6. Modesty and Humility: Virgos are typically modest and humble, preferring to let their actions speak louder than words. They may downplay their achievements and seek improvement continually.

  7. Health-Conscious: Virgos are mindful of their well-being and often adopt healthy lifestyles. They pay attention to diet, exercise, and overall self-care to maintain optimal health.

  8. Worry Prone: While their analytical minds serve them well, Virgos may sometimes overanalyze and become prone to worrying. It's important for them to find a balance and not let anxiety dominate their thoughts.

  9. Discerning Tastes: Virgos often have refined and discerning tastes. Whether it's in the arts, fashion, or any other aspect of life, they appreciate quality and craftsmanship.

Understanding these traits can provide insights into the personality of individuals with their Sun in Virgo. Keep in mind that the overall astrological profile, including the Moon and rising signs, contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of a person's characteristics.

Mercury-The Messenger

The 8th Sephiroth-Hod (Splendor) is the Sphere of Mercury, who both rules and is exalted in Virgo. Being a mutable zodiac sign of Earth, Virgo is a stabilizing influence in the Qabalistic World of Assiah and the suit of Disks (The Material world). Along with the Sun radiating its life-giving light upon all this material fertility of Virgo/Earth, it implies, "intelligence lovingly applied to material matters, especially those of the agriculturist, the artificer and the engineer". [The Book of Thoth, pg.,216]

Prudence and wisdom are qualities of patient skill, the opposite of pushing to make things happen or the fear-based ignorance of holding back or resisting. The coin-like Disks have blossomed, the patient skill of wisdom and prudence has prevailed, and the successful harvest is shown by the protective leaves that hold back chaos. There is no place for doubt in this card for it is a manifested Trust of skill.

Discus

Again, the Thoth Deck 8 of Disks is called PRUDENCE. Disks are Pentacles, Stones, or Coins, even Dreamcatchers, in other traditionally modeled decks. But Disks seems an appropriate symbol, something on which Crowley and I both agree. Disks must be stabilized by a spinning motion, a circular rotational force, to hit their mark. Even the atoms of rocks are spinning in a centrifugal manner, so when representing the earthly powers, the spinning of the Disk, with its internal spin, best shows force and form as one presence in the crystalline /coagulated light of manifestation. Again, nature is showing us that solids are just illusions of electron motion held within a magnetic vessel.

Populus

Virgo is noted to be a very practical sign which tends to cause over-concern with minute details.

Because this is an 8, any gain that prudence gives are soon dispersed, often making Prudence no great virtue. The message in divination is that of skill, prudence, and over-carefulness about trivial things, at the expense of the larger. But because Hod is represented by Mercury and Mercury is exalted in Virgo, there is also predilection for loving intelligence involving material matters. The Rulership of the Sun in Virgo suggests birth, as well, thus the disks are arranged in the Geomantic figure Populus. These disks are then shown as flowers of a Great Tree, rooted solidly in fertile lands.

The Lost Soul Tarot-8 of Pentacles.

The Lost Soul Tarot- 8 of Pentacles illustrates eight golden pentacle decorated disks placed in an ordered pattern. It does somewhat represent the Thoth image of a tree with the center 2 disks as a trunk. It represents a time of hard work and diligence.

This card is also like the Rider-Waite-Smith-Eight of Pentacles Tarot card and is again more prosaic and traditional as it shows only disks as a sculpted work while 6 are in a equal side by side pattern and are a foundation for the 2 layered on top. The Divinatory meaning of the Lost Soul Tarot -8 of Pentacles card is, skill, prudence and over carefulness about trivial things, at the expense of the great. A meaning which also applies to the Thoth Tarot 8 of Disks.

In both numerology and gematria (Qabalistic numerology) the number 8 holds significant meanings, often associated with power, balance, and material success. However, the interpretations can vary depending on the specific cultural or esoteric context. Here's an overview of the meanings of the number 8 in these two systems:

Numerology

In numerology, the number 8 is often associated with:

  1. Power and Authority: The number 8 is linked with ambition, leadership, and the ability to achieve material success. It is seen as a number of strength and discipline.
  2. Balance and Justice: The shape of the number 8 (∞) is reminiscent of the infinity symbol, suggesting balance and the flow of energy. It symbolizes the balance between the material and spiritual worlds, as well as the concept of karma — what goes around comes around.
  3. Material Success: People with the number 8 in their numerology charts are often seen as hard workers who are focused on their goals, especially in terms of financial and business success. This number is often associated with wealth and prosperity.
  4. Practicality and Realism: The number 8 signifies a pragmatic approach to life, emphasizing efficiency, organization, and the ability to manifest goals into reality.

Gematria

Gematria is a Qabalistic/Kabbalistic method of interpreting Hebrew scriptures by computing the numerical value of words. In Hebrew gematria:

  1. The Letter "Het" (ח): The 8th letter of the Hebrew alphabet is "Het" (ח), which has a numerical value of 8. This letter can represent life ("Chai" - חי), and its numerical value is often associated with vitality and dynamic energy.
  2. Symbolism: The number 8 in gematria can symbolize new beginnings and transcendence beyond the natural order. It represents a step beyond the perfection of the number 7, indicating a realm beyond the physical and into the metaphysical.
  3. Spiritual Aspects: In the context of the Kabbalah, the number 8 can also be linked with the sephirot (emanations) on the Tree of Life, particularly Hod and Yesod, which involve aspects of humility, acknowledgment, and foundation.

In summary, both numerology and gematria view the number 8 as a powerful symbol, though their interpretations focus on different aspects of power, balance, and transcendence. In numerology, the emphasis is on material success and balance, while in gematria, the focus is on spiritual life and new beginnings.

When the 8 of Disks/8 of Pentacles is thrown during a reading, the querent is in:

  • A moment of creative birth of 8 weeks or 8 months, requiring the practice of physical caution, carefulness, and prudence.
  • It is up to you to decide.
  •  Making sure that all the bases are covered; every "t" crossed and every "I" dotted.
  • Making intelligent choices so that the material world more closely conforms to one's needs.
  • The possibility of turning a talent or skill into a profession.
  • Skill in work with energy and forms, such as fingers working on a manipulative substance.
  • That in the next 8 weeks or 8 months you can experience the harvest of your skill, prudence, and wisdom. All from you’re organizing or attending to details.
  • This card may also mean that all that you have learned or are learning will facilitate new growth in a skillful financial endeavor in the next 8 weeks or 8 months especially if you pay attention to details. This financial endeavor could involve Virgo people (August 21 to September 21) or harvesting a fertile relationship with important Virgo people in your life.
  • This card represents a wise state of mind that operates from a foundation of prudence, centered integration, and Order rather than from chaos.

If ill defined by the surrounding negative cards, it implies:

  • Focusing too tightly on the minute details and not seeing the big picture!
  • Becoming paralyzed in formulism.
  • Not seeing the forest through the trees.
  • A penny wise, a pound foolish.
